In Matthew 15:16-20 AKJV, Jesus said, “Are ye also yet without understanding? Do not ye yet understand that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.”
Defile: v.t. [Defiled, Defiling], [ME. defoulen; Ofr. defouler, to tread underfoot, insult; influenced by ME. filen, to foul < AS. fylan, to make foul <ful, foul], 1. to make filthy; dirty; pollute. 2. to make ceremonially unclean. 3. to corrupt. 4. to profane; sully, as a person’s name. 5. [Archaic], to violate the chastity of; deflower. —SYN. see contaminate. —Webster’s New World Dictionary, College Edition ©1962
Based on the above scripture, an alcoholic might think it acceptable to God to be a drunkard; however, I Corinthians 5:11 and 6:10 state clearly that a drunkard will not enter heaven’s gates. Why? After all, a drunkard drinks alcohol and later it leaves the body, as Jesus seems to say and as man’s modern medicine assumes.
Alcohol, and drugs for that matter, taken in excess alter a consumer’s mind and behaviour, which gives Satan free reign to ultimately cause him or her to say and do things they might not otherwise do and/or say; abominable behaviours to our Father. One case in fact, a drunk uncle molested his five-year old niece and remembered doing it. He was so devastated by his actions that he neither drank nor did such a thing again.
Therefore, a drunkard is not defiled by the alcohol he or she consumes; rather, he or she is defiled by what alcohol or drugs can cause him or her to do and/or say while under excessive influence: whether the drinker remembers such things or not, he or she is nonetheless defiled. Albeit, heard is the term “dry drunk,” which refers to a person’s behaviour when sober. This means that, although sober, the person’s behaviour still mimics someone still drinking. This is due to the fact alcohol and drugs accumulate in the body’s system, as opposed to actually leaving the body. Couple this with emotional deficiencies that led to a person’s excessive drinking in the first place, which obviously were not addressed and resolved after the person stopped drinking.
The only way to truly eliminate alcohol and drugs from the body’s system is to go through a colon cleanse program designed to draw these toxins from the body in a safe manner. Then, follow up with counseling to address and resolve emotional issues that led to drinking and/or doing drugs in the first place: Christian counseling, for total healing does not come without God being part of the healing equation. He is the great physician and great psychiatrist.
I Samuel 16:7 tells us what God sees, “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”
A former alcoholic wisely observed, “As Jesus explained in Matthew, it is what comes out of our hearts that shows whether or not we have defiled our flesh temples. For example, the alcoholic’s heart has submitted its life to the god of alcohol. Nothing is more important to him or her than where, when, and how he or she is going to get that next drink. The temple is defiled but the heart was defiled first. That is why alcoholism is in truth a sin, not a disease.” ~quoted by permission
Of Christ’s list of things that defile our flesh temples, the only one unforgivable is blasphemy; which sin has been fully covered in a previous Sabbath lesson (see What is Blasphemy): still, we need to be aware that Jesus did not cite everything that defiles our flesh temples, having used only a few examples to make His point; those examples point directly to God’s Precepts cited as standing perpetual, forever. Revelation 9:20-21 adds worshiping devils, having idols of wealth and things, as well as sorceries to the list; the latter is the adding pagan rituals to those of God’s and claiming He allows it.
Revelation 21:8 also adds to this defiling list those with fears, unbelievers, abominable acts, whoremongers and liars. Verse 27 goes on to say that anyone who has committed any of these defiling acts and has not repented of them, save unforgivable blasphemy, will never enter heaven’s gates. Rather, unrepentant defilers are reserved for the second resurrection followed by utter destruction.
The above list of defiling behaviours literally covers all twelve of God’s Precept Law, which includes the two laws of Love and the first four Commandments— the four concerning our relationship with God— and the final six regarding our relationship with mankind. Obviously, if a person is disobedient in even one of God’s Statutes of Life, and it does not matter which one, he or she remains defiled thus will not be redeemed when Christ returns. If we truly love God and mankind, we cannot violate the Ten: we haven’t the heart to break any one of the Ten depending on love to obey. After all, true love for God and our neighbors comes from having “the mind of Christ:” He loved and obeyed.
Throughout the Bible, we are given many examples of how the Jewish people defiled both themselves and God’s Word as well as His Law. We’ve been shown that they defiled the temple building in both the Old and New Testaments, defiled God’s Sabbath, defiled God’s Law, defiled themselves with unbelievers, and so forth. We even find where God said that spilling blood defiles the land; therefore, the one who spills blood is defiled.
I Corinthians 6:18-19 clearly states, “Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is [outside] the body; but he that committeth fornication [defiles] his own body. What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” The acts of fornication and adultery are essentially the same sin: both are sexual acts outside the sanctity of marriage; fornication is a sexual act without benefit of marriage, while adultery is a sexual act with a person to whom one is not married yet one or both parties are married to others.
All of these Jewish examples were given that the Gentiles, when offered salvation, might not commit the same abominations; yet, in every Christian denomination, which represent religion instead of Christianity, the same evidences of defiling in one or more ways are found: teaching lies in God’s name; observing pagan holidays and rituals; observing a day that God did not sanctify as His and Christ’s Sabbath or, if they do observe God’s true Sabbath, many violate it in various ways; as well as the use of idolatrous icons; and, promoting worldly prosperity.
Additionally, they fail to make sure their flocks are equal in all things; fail to feed the hungry and clothe the naked and house the homeless; approve divorce by twisting God’s Word and some approve multiple wives and/or multiple husbands (polygamy) thereby approving adultery and fornication: these latter are compared to the Nicolaitans in Revelation 2:6, whom history reveals were known for their claim to Christianity yet allowed men and women to have multiple spouses and taught that sex outside marriage was a normal bodily function: in other words, they allowed adultery and fornication in God’s name. Sounds like today’s “I Society”©, Mormonism and some pagan religions.
The list of abominations goes on. One has only to read the Bible to learn what defiles us versus what purifies, that we may enter heaven’s gates. We are clearly shown in Revelation 22:14 who will enter heaven, and New Jerusalem later, with Christ: “Blessed are they that do [God’s] Commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates of the City.” Obedience purifies.
The above is just one of many scriptures belying the teaching that we are dead to God’s Law, those teachers having twisted one or two scriptures actually referring to sacrificial and oblation ordinances— temporary laws representing the shadow of better to come— as opposed to the Statutes of Life. By obedience to the Precepts, we are dead only to the condemnation of the Law, to-wit: the penalty for violation being twice dead, which is to be utterly destroyed.
Many will say that all it takes is love then refer to the two Laws of Love recited by Jesus: the key word being recited. Unfortunately, denominational leaders fail to teach that God first spoke those two laws in the Old Testament: several times, in fact. Therefore, couple the above verse with I John 5:2-3— “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we obey His Commandments: and His Commandments are not grievous [burdensome].”
II John v.6, 9 declares, “And this is love, that we walk after His Commandments. This is the Commandment, as ye have heard from the beginning (Exodus c.20), That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. Whosoever transgresseth (sins), and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.” This is logic, for Christ came teaching nothing new; rather, He lived and taught His Father’s original Doctrine as given in the beginning and expects us to do the same: IF, in fact, we choose to follow in Christ’s steps.
To violate any one of God’s Statutes is to defile the flesh temple. To commit sin also proves to the Holy Spirit that such person does not “fear God:” respect, honor, love thus obey God. And, in so doing, the person fails to receive anointing of the Holy Spirit. According to John 14:26, the Holy Spirit will teach and guide in the beginning one who has been called.
What a person does with those teachings determines whether or not he or she receives anointing; which explains Christ’s statement in Matthew 20:16 and 22:14, “Many are called, few are chosen;” confirms the small numbers of sheep in comparison to the great numbers of goats. Acts 5:32 confirms when chosen status is achieved, “And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey Him.” Obedience must occur before Holy Spirit baptism will happen.
It is the spiritual anointing with gifts of the Spirit that declares us chosen, therefore redemption assured and irreversible (see lesson Grace: Times Seven). Prior to anointing, salvation is not assured and the Call might be withdrawn: based wholly on our choice between obeying God or obeying man (Acts 5:29). Without anointing, one is in danger of falling from grace; which is to lose the call to salvation, therefore never being chosen.
As III John v.11 states, “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.” Transgressing God’s Doctrine deems a person “wicked, evil, filthy;” and it is these things for which each person must repent, then “go and sin no more.” To sin again, knowing it is a sin in God’s eyes, puts a person in the position of Hebrews 10:26-27, “For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the Truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries [God haters].”
Hebrews 10, above, is supported by Romans 3:25, “[Christ] whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are PAST, through the forbearance of God.” Future sins that will be forgiven are those we commit in ignorance, not yet having learned the “weightier matters of the Law.” As those are learned, a called one is expected to confess and repent and sin no more. If the called does not confess and repent, the Call will be withdrawn.
Jude v.10 reveals what the above list does to one’s behaviour, whether they claim to be Christian or not, “But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.” They are recognized as persecuting and falsely accusing those who do speak God’s Truth, and they teach man’s smooth words while claiming it is God’s Truth; which is to speak evil of God’s Truth. All the lies spewed from pulpits would more than fill a book.
Anyone teaching and/or living those lies are acts of obedience to man thus defiled and causing others to defile their flesh temple. God first stated, and Jesus reiterated, how to recognize Truth teachers and speakers in Isaiah 8:16,20 and Matthew 5:18-19, both paraphrased: “Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. To the Law and the testimony they speak, because there is light in them . . . Whosoever shall do and teach the Law shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
As Revelation pointed out, anything that defiles will not enter the Kingdom gates when the time comes. Sadly, the time comes quickly and few heed the warnings. Rather, they argue God’s Word and make issue over a play of words, clearly not understanding the very formation of God’s statements rightly divided with all of His relative verses from throughout the Bible.
As II Timothy 3:1-7 states, “They are ever learning but never coming to the Truth.” Yes, they are ever looking for at least one or two verses to validate their continuance of sins as being acceptable to God, instead of the evil and filth God calls sins noted in verses 1-6; neither do they acknowledge nor teach that to continue in sin is a death sentence. Satan prepares his own for the day of great slaughter in the end (Psalm 34:21; Isaiah 30:25). These change God into what they want: a god catering to fleshy lusts and riches. They revel in the flesh and adamantly refuse to “die to the flesh.”
In Luke 6:43-45 Jesus defines behaviour from the heart, “For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” The fruits of righteousness, which has nothing to do with numbers.
There are so many more scriptures defining defilement that space does not permit them all. Regardless of this treatise, it is the responsibility of each person to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance into God’s Word; for without Him, Satan can mislead by way of the scriptures. It is each individual’s responsibility to seek God’s Truth and to allow God to deny or confirm this writing. If a person truly accepts God and Christ, he or she is changed from the inside out: change begins with the heart.
While our All-knowing God needs proof of nothing, we cannot discern our own hearts therefore must prove our hearts to self and the Holy Spirit, who discerns hearts by our behaviour rather than from infinite knowledge; this latter evidenced in Abraham’s experience of being commanded to sacrifice his only legitimate son in Genesis 22:11-12. The angel of the Lord is the Holy Spirit. Proof of “fearing God” was evidenced by Abraham’s obedience to the Spirit’s command to sacrifice Isaac.
Do not be defiled by living lies, thereby continuing to live in sin. Do not be defiled by refusing to die to the flesh. Man’s smooth words lead to a pit of fire and brimstone. Each person must choose either to obey God or obey man, the former rewarded with everlasting life and the latter rewarded with utter destruction.
There are no gray areas acceptable to either God or Christ. The choice is black or white; it is yes or no; it is life or death. “I put before you life and death; choose life” (Deuteronomy 30:19).
Understand why God’s Ten Commandments also are called Law of Righteousness, Statutes of Life and Law of Liberty; understand why scripture further states that, if you obey God’s Law, you will live in them: which statement is made in both the Old and New Testaments (Leviticus 18:5 and Galatians 3:12). A heart loving God and faith in Christ motivates obedience, thus frees us from being rendered twice dead and rewards us with eternal life.

Author Bonita M Quesinberry, though NOT the author of our Library’s Biblical works (rather the Holy Spirit who said to her, “Put your fingers on the keyboard,” when she had asked “How am I to do that?”) is better known as “BonnieQ” on the Internet, is 66yo, 2 children, 4 grandkids, 3 great- grandkids; more than 35 years of Spirit led Bible research and study, specific emphasis on “weightier matters” of God’s Law and interpreting prophecies: a mature “babe” in the Word “taught by no man.” Another 30+ years was gained by the works of Uriah Smith, who brought prophecy current to the first part of the Philadelphia age: his work was definitely Spirit led.
Raised Baptist and former Sunday school teacher, today Bonnie neither supports nor belongs to any Christian denomination: God’s Holy Bible is her only Doctrine and her church is where “two or more are gathered in Christ’s name.” Her background is in Law, Banking, Municipal Utilities, College Teacher; free licensed Christian Counselor for females all ages, especially troubled teens. Visit her website, Seventh Seal Library, and online Christian group Remnant Doctrine Keepers: links on the Library shelf above.
By the grace of God, Bonnie overcame a childhood fraught with every form of child abuse, violent rape at 16, death of two of her children, 6-minor and 2-major surgeries, divorce, and deaths of her only sibling and both parents. Forgiveness is key to overcoming all adversities; and, to be able to forgive comes only from knowing, loving and obeying our heavenly Father and Christ. SCIENCE HAS PROVEN they exist BUT one must experience them through faith.
Thorns in her side: MS and Lupus manifested by age 8, Fibromyalgia, Degenerative Vascular Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, heart disorder, hypoglycemia, epilepsy, migraines; survived 30-ft fall at age 6, another head injury at 10, cancer and two heart attacks in early 1991; 2 more severe head injuries as adult; and, in 2005, deadly brain aneurysm; 08-20-06, broken back and again in 2008. Laugh with her as she says, “Everyone has always teased me about being an accident looking for a place to happen!” Typical for MS patients.
She does well by doing everything God’s way: all natural, no prescription or over the counter drugs. GOD IS GOOD and FAITHFUL and knows what is best for our bodies. After all, He designed them. God is the great physician and great psychiatrist! We are nothing without God and everything with Him and His Christ.
